Ambitious Dragon, Dream and Do, For Pleasure, Foolish Pleasure (2022)
Painted Aluminium Sheet
300x300x650 mm each

‘Ambitious Dragon, Dream and Do, For Pleasure, Foolish Pleasure’ consists of four racehorse-snail chimeras, each of which has been named after a real-life racehorse. The artwork references the ‘horse race method’ that is widely and almost habitually used in corporate life within various fields such as business management, journalism, and politics to analyze data while making a choice among a number of candidates. This method focuses on keeping the score of how one performs in comparison to others and highlights distinctions while overlooking the individual’s own skills, knowledge, and experience. Through drawing parallels with the extractive nature of the modernist obsession with domination and capital, the sculptures question if this state of constant comparison and competition in addition to being perceived as replaceable and replicable could be conducive to one’s alienation from their own human capital as well as influencing a tradition of self-exploitation. The color of the sculptures hints at the origins of purple dye, which was first invented by extracting the pigment from the glands of sea snails.
